Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Proglycem Dosing question
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Here is a post from January 18 that may be helpful. It includes a quote from Dr. Williams about 'upper limits' of prednisone.

>From my experience (I am not a vet) your current dosage of prednisolone doesn't seem high at all. Given a BG level of 50, Kyle needs more help to get him back to the 'normal' range, usually considered to be 80-120. If you are dosing 0.15 ml twice daily, at 5 mg/ml, then this is a total of 1.5 mg per day, which to me sounds like it's still a fairly low dosage.

Also, if you are using prednisone, you might want to switch to prednisolone, which is more easily metabolized.

Keep in mind that Proglycem (diazoxide) will help some ferrets but will do little or nothing for others. It is also pretty expensive.

If it were me, I'd try to increase the dosage of prednisolone before branching out to diazoxide. Remember that insulinoma is a progressive disease, and thus you will have to increase dosages of the medicines that you use over time to 'keep up' with the excess insulin being produced by the pancreatic tumors.
