Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret with rectal prolapse very lethargic
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This is a friends ferret on Wednesday she noticed he was not as bouncy as usaul . She checked him over but found nothing obviously wrong. He eating, drinking, defecating and urinating normnally Saturday evening he was a little floppy, very sleepy. She examined him and noticed that he had what looked like a prolapsed rectum. He was seen at the emergency veterinary hospital on examination it appeared he had an anal prolapse but the vet was very worried about how lethargic he was, too lethargic to be due to the prolase He was given a pain killer and sent home with a lechtade rehydration sachet for his water. The emergency vet was not ferret knowledgeable so she wanted to liase with a more ferret savvy colleague, after consulation it was decided to admithim for closer observation possibily take some bloods. Also if necessary give some SC fluids. They decided to hold off taking bloods because they didn't want to anaesthetise him On Sunday morning he seemed much brighter and he
was sent home. To be reviewed by a ferret specialist today ( Monday)

His prolase seems to be resolvedy. He is eating, drinking, defecating and urinating but is still very lethargic. The vet had felt that the lethargy may not be linked to the prolapse but had never experienced an anal prolapse in a ferret before so couldn't be sure. His faeces are formed ans there has been no diarrhea. he doesn't have unsuperivesed access to toys that can be chewed up

No one on our forum has experience of this so I wondered if any of you could shed light on this. Woody is a lovely boy and usually really bouncy, even for a ferret, so it is terrible to think of him being like this.

I have had a look thrpugh the archive but can't see any explanation for a prolapse making him so lethargic, does anyone have any idea?
