Subject: [ferrethealth] Watery eyes, trouble opening right eye, abdominal tenderness, diarrhea
To: ferrethealth <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
Hi, everyone,
On January 18th Ella (eight year old spayed female) went to the vet
for her six month checkup. She had a left adrenalectomy five years,
two months ago and a moderate reaction to her distemper vaccine last
April. Other than that she has been absolutely healthy in recent
years. The physical examination went well but her blood work was off:
elevated globulin, elevated white blood cells, blood glucose of 77,
one number for liver function also a little off. Sorry, I don't have
the exact numbers now but I should have them tomorrow and will post
them then.
Anyway, at that time Ella had no clinical symptoms at all. She was
playing, running around, eating and drinking and pooping normally.
She seemed absolutely fine until last Thursday when she had a bout of
diarrhea. On Friday she seemed absolutely fine again.
Since Saturday Ella has been barely able to open her right eye. Both
eyes look watery. Last night she had diarrhea again. Ella has also
always really loved rough play. The last two nights she's come to me
to play with her as always. When she does, though, if I touch her
belly much she vocalizes discomfort and play ends. Ella ran around
and explored like always for nearly three hours last night, is eating
and drinking normally, and still has plenty of energy.
I spoke with her vet earlier this afternoon and she is really
concerned about Ella. Her first thought, between the blood work, the
diarrhea and the abdominal tenderness is intestinal lymphoma. She had
to go into a procedure with another patient but will call me back
later today with, in her words, "lots of questions". Ella has an
appointment for more diagnostic work at 10 AM tomorrow morning as this
doesn't appear to be an emergency situation as of yet.
The symptom with the eyes is the one thing that doesn't track for me
if we're talking about intestinal lymphoma. When the bloodwork came
back the possibility of an infection or inflammation was raised and
that does seem to make more sense.
Anyway, I'm just posting looking for ideas and questions to take with
me to the vet appointment tomorrow. I'd particularly like to hear
from anyone who's seen this odd combination of symptoms and, of
course, from the vets on list.
Thanks in advance,
Caity and the terrific trio
(Ella, Zephyr and Chin Soon)
