Subject: [ferrethealth] Best treatment for hairballs/blockages- how long, how much, and when to panic?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello,

I am currently treating my one year old for hairballs with petroleum jelly. He has passed some very large hairballs and strangly passed a very large peice of undigested Ziwipeak. Have there ever been accounts of jerky like texture causing blockages? This concerns me.
[Had to look that up. Ziwipeak is a pet food made in New Zealand.]

I am still finding his poops to be very small, seedy or jelly like and has at times been straining. A blockage would be the utmost concern, but I am also uncertain if I am treating him correctly.

-How much petroleum jelly should I be giving, how often and for how long?
-Can pure pumpkin be used more effectivly? If so, how much and how often for how long?
-How much time does it take for the system to "clear out" before I am certain it will not pass? (He IS currently eating, drinking, playing & acting normal)

My vet is away teaching for the week, typically she pep talks me through these things...Thank you kindly!
