In general, there are so many things that could be causing the grinding so treating the symtoms (grinding) is just a part of it.
A better way is to treat him with pepcid and or carafate. A 10mg
Pepcid disolved in 10cc of water on (.25cc)an empty stomach is much better than Pepto. But, it's also necessary to try to pin point the source. A small list would be a hairball, gastric upset, insulinoma (can cause grinding and nausea)the list is too broad but these just name a few.
