Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Young ferret with bladder control problems.
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Found out some answers today. Seems as though this poor dear has no Vulva... nope not there. I think this case even threw my vet :)
I knew something was odd, but I thought impossibility she still pee's. Nope, doesn't have one. She's got a hole basically where she voids her bladder further back to the side (where her Vulva would be). She obviouly has another infection which the vet says will probably be concurrant for her.
Her left kidney does have a cyst but all her levels are withing normal ranges. Decided to express her as much as I can to control the wet spotting and use puppy pads (more absorbant) in her cage.
Here's the thing.. was she born that way and Marshalls sold her anyway? Was her spay messed up? Or was she re-routed after determining a problem later?
Im am interested in trying to contact her previous owners. Im also interested in anyone that has experienced this same type of thing
(re-routing in males for prepuce tumors etc.) to see what they
have encounterd. Anyone have any pictures of that?
It looks to me as if she may have had a vulva at one time as there is a circular area with no hair growth there. Maybe she was re-routed due to a problem.
Anyone??

Thanks again
LeanneB

[It is typically male ferrets who are rerouted --
typically due to a blockage of the urethra which
can not be resolved -- and the penis is then
typically amputated. We came close to having
to do that with one but luckily repeated bladder
emptying with syringe allowed the crystals to
come out.

I think that it was Dr. Mark Finkler who used to
have a website showing how that life-saving
surgery can be done, but I don't think that page
exists any longer.
