A lot depends on the food and the ferret. In my experience the very best way to know if you're getting enough nutrition into a sick ferret is to have a scale that weighs in the ~1 gram range. You can find them as kitchen scales for around $30 online.

If the ferret is steadily losing weight, it isn't taking in enough calories (or it's getting dehydrated, either way a bad situation). If it's holding its weight, you're doing OK.
