Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Adrenal Disease Treatment Question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi, Jules,
Some vets (including our current one) use Lupron as a diagnostic tool.
If the ferret responds then you're dealing with adrenal. If not,
then you still don't know since not all ferrets respond to Lupron. We
tried this approach with Chin Soon. She did not respond to Lupron but
most definitely had adrenal. She had surgery in April and is just
fine.
Since Lupron can be used as a diagnostic tool I have to believe that
it won't hurt Shitake if he doesn't have adrenal disease.
The vets I've dealt with generally believe that melatonin does very
little if anything. They just don't believe in it. We did try a
melatonin implant with Nyssa in 2006 since she had other medical
issues and was not a surgical candidate. It did absolutely nothing
but I've since been told that is pretty much expected in a ferret with
lymphoma, which she had. I've not heard any reports of melatonin
doing harm so if your vet gave a recommended dosage you probably have
nothing to lose by trying.
The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet. I don't even play one on TV.
All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio (Ella, Zephyr and Chin Soon)
