Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Lung Hemmorhages after Adrenal Surgery
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

To answer a few of these questions:
=C2=A0
Obi never spent a day in her life around second hand smoke.=C2=A0 She was a=
pampered little princess.=C2=A0 And she played her role well!=C2=A0 I can'=
t say how long after death the necropsy was performed because I don't know =
the exact time she passed away.=C2=A0 She was still alive at 11pm Friday an=
d gone by 6am.=C2=A0 She was just slightly stiff when she was discovered.=
=C2=A0 She was placed=C2=A0on our enclosed (but not heated) back porch to k=
eep her body cool until the vet's office opened.=C2=A0 The necropsy began a=
round 9am.=C2=A0 The vet did not think the hemmorhaging, which looked like =
petechiae to her, was a result of blood pooling after death.=C2=A0 The=C2=
=A0vet confirmed liver and lung samples went=C2=A0out for further study.=C2=
=A0 The vet also is curious as to what happened to Obi.
=C2=A0
Obi's sick cage was a top-loading=C2=A018x24 inch single floor "training ca=
ge."=C2=A0 I used it to isolate baby ferrets=C2=A0before they were introduc=
ed and it has housed 3 other post surgery ferrets.=C2=A0 It had been cleane=
d and disinfected in preparation for Obi.=C2=A0 The bottom was covered with=
piddle pads and a=C2=A0fleece cuddle cup with a blanket=C2=A0for her=C2=A0=
to sleep in.=C2=A0 She came home awake and=C2=A0drank water on her own but =
wasn't too interested in food.=C2=A0 She curled up in her bed and fell asle=
ep.=C2=A0 At=C2=A010pm she was found lying on her right side with her head =
thrown back.=C2=A0 There were slight 'popping' sounds coming from her when =
she breathed and she was making a=C2=A0rhythmic cooing sound...like that of=
a dove.=C2=A0 The vet=C2=A0was called and allowed to listen to the noises =
and she thought it was just a response to pain.=C2=A0 Obi was given=C2=A0ha=
lf a=C2=A0dose of Bupenex (.1mL I believe) and after=C2=A0an hour=C2=A0her =
body started to relax and the cooing became less frequent.=C2=A0=C2=A0She w=
as put back in
her cage on her side=C2=A0and covered with=C2=A0the blanket=C2=A0for the n=
ight.=C2=A0 And she never moved again.=C2=A0 She did have a small bowel mov=
ement before passing.=C2=A0 Could the popping have been fluid, or blood in =
the lungs?
=C2=A0
I know my vet=C2=A0uses only inhaled anesthesia for ferrets but I don't kno=
w=C2=A0the name.=C2=A0 Oddly enough, after reading the information from Dr.=
Williams and the case included with it, Obi also had a small lump on her e=
ar when she went in for adrenal surgery.=C2=A0 The vet drained it but did n=
ot remove it during the surgery.=C2=A0 I had posted to the forum about this=
lump (was told it might be a hematoma)=C2=A0and took her to see a vet 3 ti=
mes but no one seemed concerned by it.=C2=A0 Now it makes me wonder...I had=
n't given the lump a second thought until I read that post and recognized s=
imilarities!=C2=A0 Could the lump have been an external sign of cancer?=C2=
=A0 Biopsy results should come in early this week but all signs=C2=A0point =
to cancer.
