Subject: [ferrethealth] some genetic effects you might not expect
To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
This abstract that was just added to PubMed is of a study in mink
which are in the same genus but a different species from ferrets. It
is a good reminder that in ferrets, too, creating changes for
appearances can result in a number of unexpected differences, some of
which can affect health. For example, remember that in mink ferrets
with certain pelages are more inclined to some diseases. If memory
serves that includes ADV. Check me on that because I could be
remembering a wrong illness.

> [Effects of monorecessive and double recessive mutations affecting
> coat color on the monoamine content of the brain of the American
> mink (Mustela vison Schreber, 1777)] [Article in Russian] [No
> authors listed]
> The effects of mutations affecting the coat color on the dopamine,
> noradrenaline, and serotonin contents of the hypothalamus and
> brainstem of the American mink have been studied. The sample
> comprised standard (+/+) and mutant minks, including the
> monorecessive pastel (b/b), silver-blue (p/p), and white hedlund (h/
> h) and the combination double recessive sapphire (a/a p/p) and pearl
> (k/k p/p) ones. The dopamine content of the brainstem of the
> monorecessive pastel (b/b) and silver-blue (p/p) minks has been
> found to be higher than in standard (+/+) minks. Conversely, the
> homozigosity for two coat color loci in double recessive pearl minks
> (k/k p/p) significantly decreases the noradrenaline and serotonin
> contents of the hypothalamus. In addition, monorecessive and double
> recessive minks differ from each other in the serotonin contents of
> the midbrain and medulla.

Also, emerging but hopefully something that will stay rare:
