I tend to agree with you Sukie.

It stands to reason that if there are determinants of health for humans, i.e., environment, genetics, economic factors, stressors, etc., the same can be said for animal companions.

While there are extenuating circumstances, like terminal illness, that cause people to surrender ferrets, the vast majority are surrendered for less than honourable reasons. The first thing I do when we get a new surrender in is to make a veterinary appointment for a complete health check. Rarely do we find even young ferrets to be in perfect health.

I think in many ways ferrets, because they are so dependent on humans, are more ravaged healthwise when rejected or neglected by their human caretakers. Unlike dogs or cats who can survive if need be, by reverting to a feral state. I am not suggesting they are any way less wounded emotionally, but I believe cats and dogs, for the most part, are hardier physically.
