Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Blood tests say Adrenal, Help please
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Two comments and a question of my own:

Not all ferrets who have one adrenal growth get a second one.
(That may be another thing which varies among households
and individuals.) Most of ours through the decades who have
had an adrenal growth never had the other one affected. (And,
no, that would not have been missed because for so long ours
were used after death for necropsy and pathology to teach both
vets and techs who wanted to know more about ferrets. In
fact, doing so found one -- but only one -- had asymptomatic
adrenal disease at time of death.

The question:
What prostate drugs can be safely used with deslorelin? Given
Hilbert's past with urinary malformations and more I want to
be ready to jump if it turns out that be needs prostate help.

Second comment (about deslorelin):
So far we are very happy with the deslorelin. Yes, I have read
people write this before but what a boost they got from it. Both
began playing more and behaving more joyfully. It's not just from
disease control because this change isn't like what is seen with
Lupron at sufficient levels, having had ferrets on that, including
the current two. Those who said they become more kit-like were
not fooling.

The deslorelin also seems to be giving more control of Mornie's
huge right adrenal carcinoma. She is not growing fur but her body
shape has marvelously improved, so combined with her activity
level and her high happiness quotient she can do some things she
had stopped doing like pull-ups on the chairs and then climbing
up to the dining table. Not bad for a 6 year year old with three major
medical problems, right? It would not be a surprise for a very
healthy 6 year old, but for one with so much going on it's really
wonderful. She can really dash around, too.

Lupron did not help her at all, and she is not someone who copes
well with surgery so one where the Cava is so compromised that
a ligation would probably be needed, in addition to her other
problems made us think about deslorelin.

The other ferret we now have on deslorelin actually lost both adrenals
(mostly) for prophylactic reasons. The right could not come out
completely at that time, though. Hilbert has some serious urinary
tract problems from a malformation that was corrected to a tendency
to cystine uroliths (a genetic problem requiring a special lower
protein diet) and he developed such a complete urinary blockage when
he was very young that it almost killed him, and took a year for him to
reach normal activity levels afterward and an additional half year for him
to regain his weight to normal levels. Anyway, during his surgeries the
hydronephrosis which had made his kidneys enormous so badly
rubbed on his adrenal glands that they were not diseased but were
terribly inflamed so it seemed safest for him to get as much of them
out as possible at that time. Later, that bit of right which had to remain
did overgrow so he is one his meds to supply adrenal corticosteroids
(fludrocort and prednisolone) but he is also on deslorelin due to
overproduction of hormones by the adrenal tissue.

He is also markedly happier on deslorelin.
