Subject: [ferrethealth] re: insulinoma levels
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I don't fast the ferrets before testing glucose levels and I've never had a normal reading on a ferret I thought had insulinoma. I've had wasting ferrets that didn't have insulinoma that had excellent glucose levels (125).
It is about an hour drive to our vet and food and water is in the travel cages unless someone is going in for surgery. Typically if a ferret is going to be tested, I've seen symptoms indicating the need to do so - staring off into space, drunken walking when first getting up or after minor stress, salivating, difficulty focusing, more than usual flat ferreting, nausea, harder to wake up/sleeping more. Adrenal ferrets have their glucose levels tested as those two diseases seem to run hand in hand in many of our cases. There have been a couple ferrets that I didn't notice symptoms and surprised us with low glucose levels, one at 38. Our vet tested her twice because her activity/awareness level was well above what a level that low should be. I've had others show more pronounced symptoms with levels in the 50's.
Currently I have 5 ferrets with known insulinoma, 3 also have adrenal disease.
