Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Confused about ulcer treatment [Vet wants to do surgery!?]
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Thank you so much for every ones help both here and via email, I appreciate it very much.

We just got home from the vet... again. I had to take her, she was in extreme pain- I have never felt so helpless. We did a Barium x-ray this time (we already did a regular) and the liquid moved through her stomach VERY slowly. The doc said there was something in there, either a hairball or the ulcer. He said that it's presence may have decreased her stomach function which is why the liquid moved through so slowly.

So NOW she is scheduled for exploratory surgery in the morning. I asked if it was a little hasty since we have not been treating the ulcer properly, but he insisted that there should have been an improvement by now, not her getting worse.

The thing was, this morning she got up, ate and drank on her own, took meds and then went back to sleep. It wasn't until after I gave the antibiotics (on a full stomach) that she went downhill. This is only the 3rd dose of Biaxin that she has received and seems to be worse since starting it.

I am really overwhelmed (and exhausted) and I can hardly keep my eyes open let alone know if I am making the right decision to give my 7 year old surgery in 13 hours. Do vets perform exploratory surgery regularly in these sort of situations? Does this sound like a normal course of action?

Thanks again to everyone who has kindly helped me out in the confusing time for me.

[Yes, this sort of situation does lead to
exploratory surgery, sometimes even to
emergency surgery since some of the
possible causes can be life threatening
if they go too long.
