Hi, Sukie,
When Chin Soon went seriously diabetic post-op our vet decided she
needed insulin injections. She was on insulin for about a week and
then we weaned her off as her pancreas had begun working again. She's
been fine since.
When Ker Avon went seriously diabetic post-op (maybe eight years ago)
our vet at the time just monitored him, fearing that insulin would
prevent his pancreas from kicking in and he'd need it for the rest of
his life. His blood glucose levels were insanely high but literally
nothing was done about it. It took maybe four days for him to get back
to normal.
Which is the better approach? I don't know. Chin Soon was almost six
while Avon was younger (three or so) so, perhaps with an older ferret,
insulin is the right answer.
All the best to you and to Hilbert. You'll be in my thoughts.
Caity and the terrific trio (Ella, Zephyr and Chin Soon)
