Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: personal ferret emergency: Hilbert post-op
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
This morning Hilbert's kidney values are starting to improve.
Whether he will come home today will depend on how he
does late this afternoon or this evening.
His blood glucose has popped back down into the 50s but
Hilbert is someone who does not show symptoms in the 50s.
He does show them in his 40s so he has a very small window.
The reason for that reduction is because the very large
(pea sized) insulinoma tumor could not be completely
removed because it partly involved critical blood supply
for his stomach.
The trick is to find out how to balance him comfortably
enough without him bouncing back into diabetic mode
because he had just low amounts of Prednisolone following
his surgery, so it is essential to figure out how much of
the swing was just from his body over-reacting to removal
of the tumor.
He also needs good enough kidney values to come home and
then it has to be decided if small amounts of Lasix should continue
with increased fluid intake and subcus, same as after his
hydronephrosis. After that he was on double the normal amounts
of fluids for a while but that helped save him to live all these years
between his first year and now (his 7th year) as did modifying his
diet to avoid cystine uroliths.
I've had a hefty number of people asking for regular updates
so that they can have the info if they ever need it.
Others who have experienced post-surgical diabetes, or
post-surgical diabetes with kidney involvement are very
welcome to add their info under this topic and then people
who look up the subject line in the archives can get a range
of experiences.
BTW, yes, Hilbert is the ferret who gently and persistently
kissed and nudged my face to wake me when our past furnace
malfunctioned years ago but no alarm sounded. Yes, my hero...
(That part isn't health but people asked if he is the same one,
so anything about just that rather than about health can't be
posted to the FHL.) Anyway, yes, he is the same ferret. He is
also the one who had the bladder diverticulum, and who mostly
lost his adrenals during his hydronephrosis (except for part
under an emergency vascular clamp) prophylactically due to
the large kidneys badly inflaming them with rubbing. He's got a
few neural crest genetic markings such as incomplete mitts
but not very pronounced ones. Yes, he currently has a deslorelin
implant.
