Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: personal ferret emergency: Hilbert post-op
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hilbert's blood glucose is holding steady now, and his kidney values are still improving. He is passing urine well and has lost some of the excess fluid. So, he will be on IV at least another night, possibly more, at the hospital.

Now, as has often been discussed here, ferrets are able to have a decent bit of kidney damage and not show it on blood tests, so after this experience our vet, who works on a lot of ferrets, says that he is going to add a urine specific gravity test to his pre-op testing for ferrets. It is cheap, easy, and gives a lot of info, especially since blood work can be unreliable for judging ferret kidneys.

In Hilbert's case his large insulinoma tumor was becoming so difficult to control sufficiently with meds that surgery was his only chance. Hilbert just has also been exploring two of the complications which can happen, but fortunately was treated just in time. His creat actually continued to go up for a while after IV so he was on the precipice for kidney failure. We all got lucky.
