Subject: [ferrethealth] Mystery illness ?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Anyone with input please,
Over the last few months, I've had 4 ferrets that were healthy, approx. 4 and 5 yrs. old, suddenly act grumpy, lose their appetite, therefore, losing weight, and get weak. I got Carafate from my vet, which helped, and I hand fed these ferrets around the clock, added probiotic powder to their water, and eventually, they bounced back. Anyone else see these symptoms in their ferrets? Now, I'm working with another 5 yr. old ferret with these symptoms. He was isolated from the others when they were ill, and no other ferret now is showing these symptoms. I'm wondering if this is some ulcerative condition, a virus, ?? There's no diarrhea, but with this ferret, and the ferrets having these symptoms previously, I heard gurgling stomach noises, like there were digestive problems. The Carafate always seemed to help within 2 - 3 days. My ver suggested trying an antibiotic, like Clavamox, to see what effect that may have in clearing up the symptoms. Any ideas? Thanks very much -

Phyllis

[Any anemia or dark green stools or black ones to make
you think of ulcers?

Any vomiting, any fevers?

Any spoiled food stash perhaps hidden somewhere in
the home?

Any tests done? Results?
