Subject: RE[ferrethealth] Re: Ferret reacting badly to Diazoxide & stevia and insulinoma Q
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Chicken flavored diazoxide works well for my ferret, I put it in some
beechnut chicken baby food, then add that to her soup. She doesn't even
notice. She's been insulinomic for over two years now :-)

[Check first with a pharmacist tp find out if this med can be given with
both fats and water, as well as with meat.

Not all meds can be given with certain things and still work
optimally.

There are resources online such as
<http://www.rxmed.com/b.main/b2.pharmaceutical/b2.1.monographs/CPS-%20Monographs/CPS-%20(General%20Monographs-%20P)/PROGLYCEM.html>
which notes that diazoxide can cause fluid retention and that
the effect window is prolonged if there is kidney impairment, and more such as
that sodium retention can happen so you don't want to add sodium if
giving this med.
<http://www.drugs.com/cons/diazoxide.html> and others can
also provide info. I don't see food cautions for this med but a
number of meds have them so it is always essential to check.
