Subject: [ferrethealth] Casodex vs Finasteride
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello,

I've been on this site for over an hour now trying to find out which medicine to go with. My vet is allowing me to choose. My ferret (Loki) who is 7 has adrenal diseas. I have given him oral melatonin now for 5 years of his life at the dosage of 1mg daily as a 'hopeful' prevenative of adrenal disease. However 2 months ago he started losing his hair and now shows the symptons and signs (hard to urinate and excessive itiching of the skin). I increased his melatonin to 3mgs a day however on Monday he could not urinate. I took him to the vet who wants to use Lupron as a solution, but I perfer to keep the melatonin and just treat the secondary problem (the enlarged prostate). She gave me on Tuesday metacam as a temporary solution til she got prices and consorted with one of her peers.

After speaking with the vet tech, she said that her associate has never treated ferrets with casodex or finasteride and told me that I can choose but teh finasteride would be around 120 for 1 month and the casodex would be around 65 for 1 month supply.

My question is has anyone used these drugs and which responds quicker, faster, and if one is more reliable. Also what would the dosage be...as i'm reading conflicting info stating that the finasteride would decrease after 30 days .4mls.

Please any info with someone who knows one is more successful or any experience with any of these drugs on ferrets would be great as I need to make a decision asap. Money is not the issue if one drug works better then the other.

Thanks again,
Marci
