Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Foster update - not diabetes, still perhaps a problem- frustrating
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

At home this weekend (because he seemed stable and ate some pieces of N-bones while at the vet), Foster seemed to eat at first, and still today is taking about 10-12 mls of a mix of clinicare and chicken baby food (about 4 times Saturday). However, after eating a few pieces of N-bones ferret sticks, he reverted to not wanting much of those.

Today early Sunday am he ate about 10 ccs of the chicken /clinicare mix, and I got another 12 ccs in him about noon. But when I tried to sub cu him (they asked me to do it)he went ballistic. They had said the only way they could subcu him at the clinic on Friday was by scruffing him and giving the ringers via a syringe and needle, but here at home when I found he did not want to lap up any liquid (nutrical/water, or linatone) I just tried inserting the catheter and he struggled and tried to bite.

His wt when he left the clinic Friday was about 830g, today he's about 760g. He is still taking the liquid food, but there is something else going on - still squinty eyed and occasionally unsteady when he runs. Will do a bg after a few hours - but of course I'll have to have my roommate restrain him so I can poke his tail since he's not lapping out of a dish. They did mention at the vet that his blood work showed kidney disease, but I have had other ferrets with kidney issues and they did not seem to behave like this. We'll be back at the vet on Monday and I'll see if they can see anything that would shed light on what's going on, but its very depressing. Guess the good thing is that he still is lapping up some "soup" but the continuing loss of appetite makes me wonder - could he have an ulcer? If that is a possibility what could be done. Seem to remember that the treatment is carafate. Any info on gastric ulcers in ferrets? I know they were the species that were used to det
ermine that the bacteria in their stomach was a similar organism to that causing human ulcers. Any thoughts?

[If he can't be sub-cued then he must be at the hospital
on IV from the sounds of it. Hilbert needed IV for 3 days
after his similar problem.

It does not sound like Foster is getting enough fluids.
Kidney patients need much more in the way of fluids,
sometimes needing twice as much as most ferrets.
