Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: health alert: distemper claiming UK ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi all,
There are no distemper vaccines registered for ferrets even
in Australia.
In early times Websters(now gone) had a univalent distemper
vaccine for dogs and one 1.5ml volume vial could be used
six ferrets . Later, when this vaccine was discontinued I
used a multivalent vaccine CSL 3-1( Canvac 3) making
the freeze dry vaccine up in 1.5mls sterile water. I used 0.2
and no more that O.25ml per ferret with not adverse
affects. On no account should a half or full multivalent
dose vaccine be used on a single ferret.
I don't think a standard trial has been done in the USA or
anywhere for using multivalent vaccines at small
dilutions on a laboratory group of ferrets. (for the event
if univalent distemper vaccine(USA) was not available)
For further information see 'Ferret Husbandry,Medicine and
Surgery' chapter 8 (Publ Elsevier UK 2007)
Regards.
