Not as an alternative, but in addition to. We use Pepcid routinely when a
ferret is showing signs of gastric upset and/or stress.
2.5mg (1/4 of a standard OTC tablet) once or twice per day is what I use.
The Pepcid as you say is an H2 inhibitor and reduces the amount of acid
produced. Carafate coats the digestive tract, and soothes it in that way.
They are complementary. Carafate needs to be given at least 20 minutes
prior to other meds or food.
