Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Squinting eyes and sub Q fluids
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

We always warm the fluids. Often they come to us, sick, with a lowering body temp. Warm fluids are very soothing, and usually bring them up smoothly & quickly. Less shocking to the system than cold fluids. (Remember, the normal body temp for a ferret is 101+)

If the bag is full, about 2 minutes in the microwave, then test, by gently shaking bag to distribute heat, & laying it on your wrist. If the bag is 1/2 full, about 1 minute,& test. Then Then we draw up amount needed, into a 35cc syringe,& change needles. Ferret skin is very tough, & even just going into the bag with that needle will dull it. A sharp needle is way less traumatic for the ferret. We use a 20G here. Quick, easy delivery into the scruff, when minutes count, or when the ferret is very squirmy! This is much easier on both the ferret & you, than using a bag & a line--and you will know exactly how many cc`s you got into the ferret.

I realize there are claims out there about microwaves & plastic, but giving fluids is not a long-term event. If the microwave & plastic thing disturbs you, you could also heat the bag in a warm basin.

Hope this helps!
Love, Zoo

[The ability to tell temperatures can vary quite a bit
among people, even when using a sensitive location
to judge so it may be even safer to use something
like a Raytek Minitemp. When we got ours years ago.
When they first appeared they cost in the three figures.
Now they are only $45 on Amazon. We use ours
to check near incisions or injuries for temperature
increases that can indicate infection, to get their
soup to ferret body temp, etc. It even checks our
fridge and freezer, and things we cook for ourselves
in the microwave when we doubt the cooking times.
Mostly it is used for ferret needs, though.
