To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Thanks to everyone who listened & has worried about Rufus with me. We are not going to do the combo shot I mentioned before as pretty much everyone (vet & regular fert owner) seems to think the only outcome would be death & it might be horrible. So I'll pass on that.
On the advice of some vets on the fhl, I upped his pred just a hair from 0.1 ml 2x/day to 0.15 2x/day two days ago - our regular vet was ok with this as well.
This morning, he exited the cage under his own power for the first time in 2 or 3 weeks!!! Woohoo!!
We figured out a way to get him to eat more; it's nothing complicated, we just have to stick a pile of food in front of his face. I'm wondering if all the seizing has caused neurological problems & he simply forgets where he is? Of course, he is an old guy & blind. I'm not sure I'd know where anything was to be found if I was him either. :) He's also finding his way to the litter part of the cage much better now (we had to cover the whole lower floor of the cage with puppy pads & put the litter box on top of them). He still doesn't make it into the box but at least gets near it & there's not been any poop on his body anywhere either. And that's good because he really is not comfortable with baths.
Anyway, there you have it: an update! And it's great news!!

[It sounds like your vet might be worried
about Prednisolone side effects. Unlike
many other species ferrets are NOT usually
prone to such problems. An exception is
a risk of ulcers, but poorly controlled
insulinoma can also be a cause of that, and
there are things that can be done to prevent
that problem such as always feeding when
giving Prednisolone. See past posts from

Many people here are not "regular ferret
owners". There are ones here with decades
of experience, ones who organize ferret
conferences, ones who have helped with
veterinary research papers, ones who have
cared for hundreds, etc. but there are also
newbies to ferret healthcare so the knowledge
base varies a lot among the member
non-vets.
