if the pill is a tablet (not a capsule) and it has a score/indentation across it, you can safely cut the pill along that line and not affect dosage other than splitting the dose in half.

they're purposely made this way - with half the dose on each side - so that they can be cut in half to decrease dosage amount.

tablets that do not have this score/indentation on them can not be cut in half because the med is mixed throughout the pill and you could easily under- or over-dose if you cut the pill in half.

in those cases (and with capsules), the best thing to do would be to mix the whole thing with an appropriate item (water or an oil like olive or ferretone) in an appropriate amount and then calculate how much to give per dose. that would vary per type of med being given as well as the weight of the animal it's being given to.

the two vets i go to have always written down instructions as to what type of mixer to use, how much of it and then the dosage amount to give.

[Capsules and coated pills often are that way
to prevent exposure to saliva or too early to
stomach acid, depending on the med, so those
may not be able to be cut, and not all
meds can be exposed to water or to fats. It is
better to the professionals at a compounding
pharmacy if there is any doubt.
