Subject: [ferrethealth] vaccination questions and concerns
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi

I have a couple of questions regarding Distemper and ferrets. Is this the same strain that dogs get and can it be passed on to dogs and dogs to ferrets? I'm so nervous about giving the vaccination based on all I hear regarding the reactions in ferrets.

I have show dogs and we are so careful about not over vaccinating any more. Do those of you with dogs worry about both passing it on to each other?

I understand the rabies issue but is anyone aware of any research or studies done on ferrets and the distemper vaccs.. I'm wondering if that is part of the reason as it is in dogs with cancer, autoimmune disorders, reactions etc?

I just got a baby ferret and he is 11 weeks old based on what I've been told. I guess he's only had one vaccination. I'm concerned now that this is a huge issue and what if the dogs got the distemper? Even with proper immunization there can be weakened immune systems or elderly dogs. Have many of your ferrets gotten distemper ?
I stopped giving vaccinations to my cats (indoor cats) because I had two have reactions. This really concerns me

Sorry about bouncing around so much with all the questions.

Thanks so much
Darlene

[Almost every year I wind up hearing from
someone in the world whose ferret has possible
distemper. mMost are private notes.

Yes, dogs and ferrets can infect each other.

The rate of reactions is low and most can be treated
though not all.

FHL members will teach you about reducing reaction
risks, how vets treat for reactions, and how adult
ferrets can be tested for titer levels.

In the separate archives which you can reach from the
FHL homepage you will find more info.
