Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] how to tell if ferret is deaf
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi, Darlene,

The only deaf ferret I ever had was Pertwee, a true albino (red-eyed
white). Albinos in most species, not just ferrets, often have health
issues.

The first time I took Pertwee to the vet and told our vet at the time
that he was deaf I was surprised at the testing method. Our vet made
all sorts of loud noises right next to Pertwee's head, like banging a
metal pot with a metal spoon. Pertwee didn't react at all. Very
unscientific but I think it proved the point.

Pertwee's other senses seemed very sensitive. When we first got him a
touch from behind would startle him. He learned to come when called:
I would tap the floor three times and then wave him over and he'd come
running. I could be clear across our largish living room and he'd
feel the familiar vibration and see my wave.

None of this amounts to conclusive, formal testing but nobody who ever
interacted with Pertwee, including several vets, ever thought he could
hear in the over five years we had him.

As always, YMMV...

All the best,
Caity and the terrific trio
