Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Mystery Poop Problem
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Just like people, ferrets don't always produce poops that are uniform in appearance, color, or odor. If your ferrets are otherwise acting energetic and healthy, then it's probably not much of problem. All of ours, at one time or another, have had poops that look like your picture, and occasionally are on the smelly side due to excess bacteria. It usually sorts itself out, but if it doesn't after a few days, then a round of antibiotics might be prescribed by the vet.

If I see (or smell) 'bad' poops for more than a day, I supplement some pro-biotics into the soup of that particular ferret, and it usually helps clear things up. The bird-seedy poops are undigested fats, and the pro-biotics help to give a boost to the 'good' bacteria needed to help produce better digestion. Not all ferrets produce 'good' bacteria at the same rate, so some need pro-biotics more often than others. By pro-biotics, I refer to things like acidophilus, Bene-bac, or Forti Flora (feline), which is what I have a personal preference for with our ferrets. It comes in small packets, so it's easily dosed in small increments. And it almost always seems to work pretty quickly. I mix about 1/10 of a packet into the soup of the ferret that needs it, and usually any loose, seedy, or discolored poops are taken care of.
