Subject: [ferrethealth] Beginning dose of pred for a suddenly low bg ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I had a sudden collapse of Dewi - a 1000g ferret who has looked a little droopy the last few days. Since I had one ferret (Sienna) die in the last week, another Sandy who had to be euthanized, and Foster who is continuing to not do well, guess I did not notice Dewi getting occasionally spacy. He came downstairs and collapsed on the rug in the living room before my eyes a short while ago (5.00pm pacific time). I just did his bg and its 41 (on the Alphatrak7 setting). After the discussion online about pred doses I looked in ferrets rabbits and rodents and it says except in very small ferrets a minimum dose of 1 mg is usually needed to control clinical signs. I cannot remember for the life of me what my veterinarian usually gives as a starting dose. Any moderator with advice? I'll give him 0.5 to get him going but wondered if I should go ahead and give a total 1.0 or wait and see what the 0.5 does? It would on a Saturday of course - and how come this week is the ferret week from
hell. I'm trying to stay calm.
Meryl

[You will find that info for a different ferret in this recent discussion
but know that the dosing can vary among individuals so call your
vet hospital and ask for a call-back:

and maybe also in this one:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ferrethealth/message/12908

Just expand the replies.

Those URLs are from the web with the messages grouped
by subject line, a command that is available on the homepage
and the message page above the listings of messages. I do not
know if you will have to select that but if the URLs do not list
replies under the original message and give you a click on line
to expand the replies then perhaps you do.
