Hi Stacey. This is a pretty terrible disease for a ferret to get. We don't know what causes it and there is no cure. You just manage the condition until the ferret is suffering enough to warrant euthanasia. The ferret will have to be fed numerous times daily (approx. 3-6) in order to keep body condition. He should be feed a liquid/gruel type diet. I used a comibination of water soaked kibble, science diet a/d, and baby food all blended in the blender to a very liquid consistency. While feeding him, hold the upper part of his body up for gravity to carry the liquid down. You can also rub the left side of his neck to facilitate the downward progression of the liquid. I also used a promotility drug called cisapride and another herbal product called Essiac. My Gus went downhill then I got him doing better for about 2 months. These guys generally get aspiration pneumonia due to some regurgitated food going down the trachea into the lungs. The goal is to keep them feeli
ng as good as possible for as long as possible.
Good luck.
Dr. Heather

They aren't always triggered by eating (about 50%), some things are worse than others. I'm trying to get him eating standing up, so he will be use to it as it gets worse. If he starts to refuse food and treats I'll know its time, which is VERY SAD :(
