Subject: [ferrethealth] Deslorelin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

We have gotten these from Dr. [vet's name and hospital removed per
FHL rules]
and had great results with most ferrets. He tells us that if a ferret is
responding to Lupron, deslorelin should be effective as they work the same
way. I asked him about a higher dose & he said that the next size up is for
horses.
[The horse product is NOT a time release product. Ferrets need Lupron DEPOT
or Suprelorin deslorlin IMPLANT, both of which are time release products.
To understand why see:
http://www.miamiferret.org/24hr_lupron.htm
and remember that Lupron and deslorelin are in the same drug class
with this consideration since their daily forms (which are not time release)
have the potential to actually worsen adrenal disease.

He also tells us that if they don't respond, it is probably a
malignant, hot tumor so surgery is the beat option. My guy that is not
responding is at least 5 or 6 so it may not be an option for him. I
understand that recovery from surgery is equal parts 'healing' (don't we all
take a little longer as we age) and stress. Doesn't look good for my guy.
Another vet suggested adding lupron to the treatment. I may do that as it's
the same as giving the higher dose of lupron. Won't hurt I don't suppose.
This guy came to me completely bald, thin wrinkly skin, agressive so it
could be that if we can catch it earlier deslorelin or lupron may be more
effective???
