Subject: [ferrethealth] Help with vommiting ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

I am hoping someone may be able to offer advice. I have a male, castrated, ferret who is approx 1 year old. He shed his winter weight but in the last week (under really) he has lost more and he became very lethargic.

He was seen by my vet and treated symptomatically - fluid, anti biotics etc and perked up. He had been eating and drinking normally - we seperated him as soon as we realised he was poorly to ensure that he was eating and drinking. He enjoyed eating a convalesence food to get more nutrients into him so no concerns regrding appetite.

The following day he was brighter but I requested the vet do the lab blood tests to check him over and find a cause. These came back showing very high liver enzymes and increased bile levels but nothing else. he was again treated with supportive fluids and oral anti-biotics were started. That night he vomitted once (witnessed) but otherwise seemed bright and was still eating.

The following morning he started to vomit more frequently - the vomit is normally clear, occassionally yellow ish but this is when he has just eaten. The vet treated with a steroid jab, anti-sickness jab and gave me a sachet of powder to protect his liver. He wasn't sick for little while but for the last 18 hours or so he has been vomitting frequently.

He goes back to the vet in the morning but I am really concerned about what could be causing this and how we can treat him. We are supporting him with 2hrly fluids (rehydration meds) and he is spontaneously trying to eat and drink but anything into him seems to make him vomit and he is looking very worn down, because of the vomitting he is unlikely to be getting the benefit of any meds we are giving him.

Can anyone suggest anything that could help us identify and treat our poorly boy? We are so worried.

Thank you.
