To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Mike,

Mix the A/D with water using a small fork and sort of whipping it by hand. =
Mixes quite well. About 1/4 of a can to a couple tablespoons of water or =
more. Then pop it into the microwave for 15 seconds to warm it. Always te=
st it with your finger to make sure there are no hot spots in it. Sprinkle=
a couple of drops of Ferretone on top of it (2-3 drops). Then put it onto=
your finger and wipe it on his mouth. Feed the entire amount to him by dip=
ping your finger into the A/D and letting him lick it off your finger.=20

Each time you give him some you will have to get him started by first givin=
g it to him on your finger to lick off. I give my ferrets A/D once a day s=
o that they are used to it when they become ill. However, each and every o=
ne requires a lick off mom's finger first before they'll touch it and for s=
ome, this is after a couple of years of daily feedings ; )

You can add Carnivore Care to it as well. This is a powder and has to be m=
ixed directly into the fatty A/D BEFORE adding water to it or it won't mix =
well.

The key is the finger lick and that the mix is warmed.

ECE can cause painful mouth ulcers, which is generally what causes disinter=
est in food. Have a look inside his mouth they may appear as red spots or =
open sores on the roof of his mouth. Kibble would be especially painful to=
eat. Sometimes the ulcers are in the throat and are more difficult to see=
.

If ECE has been confirmed I'm not sure I would do an invasive needle aspira=
te as well??? His gut is sore from the ECE. It takes anywhere from 6 mont=
hs to a year to clear up and you will have ongoing, recurring acute episode=
s for up to a year. His symptoms are consistent with the typical pattern.

Ensure is extremely sweet as well, not the best supplement for ferrets.

[This is incredibly similar to our mixing approach.=20
I'm big on heating the water and then adding it
using two salad forks for the mix and checking
the temp with our "soup gun", a Raytek Minitemp,
but that sequence is because we give it in metal
bowls. I think that Mike wanted tips on working
in kibble. That might need to soak first in its own
hot water to get soft enough. Then you can use
either Tressie's approach or mine depending on
your type of bowl.

To verify ECE specifically, there is the Michigan State
Ferret Health Group and I seem to recall that they
recently began seeking specimens again for study, too.

There is a far less specific test that can done just to
see if coronavirus may be present. I am not sure if
that one may also pick up a history of having had a
coronavirus, but seem to recall that it is for active
virus. (Anyone know?). Here is a bit on that test:

Ferrets get both the usual enteric ECE, and the much
more rare systemic ECE with the presentation that is
FIP-like (though it is not FIP).
