Hi Julie,

>From Emergency Medicine in the Ferret by Christal Pollock, DVM, DABVP-Avian=
(2007):

Cisapride 0.5 mg/kg PO Every 8=9624 h

Metoclopramide 0.2=961.0 mg/kg PO, SC Every 6=968 h

1lb. 7 oz. =3D 1.44lbs =3D 0.65kg

PO =3D by mouth, oral route
SC =3D sub-q injection

Formulas:

Cisapride (0.5 x 0.65)divided by med concentration =3D single dose (xmL)

Metoclopramide (0.2 x 0.65) divided by med concentration (i.e., 5 mg/ml) =
=3D lower end dose (0.026mL) CONFIRM concentration.

(1.0 x 0.65) divided by med concentration (5mg/ml) =3D upper end dose (0.13=
mL) CONFIRM concentration.

The concentration should be on the bottle or the vial.

NOTE: Cisapride may increase sedation when used with benzodiazepine tranqui=
lizers like Valium!

Prokinetic drugs such as cisapride increase gastric motility and speed GI t=
ransit. This may affect the absorption of other oral medications.

Side effects of cisapride: GI symptoms including abdominal pain and diarrhe=
a are common.

Cisapride is more potent and has broader prokinetic activity than metoclopr=
amide, increasing the motility of the colon, as well as that of the esophag=
us, stomach, and small intestine (Merck Veterinary Manual).

If I am not happy with the veterinary care a ferret is receiving from a par=
ticular veterinary clinician I seek a second opinion, which any good profes=
sional will support. This is true for healthcare professionals working wit=
h animal companions as it is for those working with humans.
