Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: HIlbert has an infection and is on IV
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hilbert is well enough again to be off IV and come home.

Mornie had a much rougher time for about 2 hours last night
then began to improve. We knew that at that level we would
be able to maintain her at home with careful care till morning
but after a couple of hours of it she improved quite a bit and
now her feces is sort of splats and she is tired so sleeping a
lot but frequent soups keep her hydrated well. Projectile
diarrhea has stopped. She is the sickest of the ones at home
but is not in danger. Then again, she also has carcinoma and
sebaceous epithelioma, and gets Prednisolone, so it just
makes sense that she would be sicker. She has the master
bathroom.

The other three have it more mildly though I had to separate
out Pivot last night because she also got the vomiting with it
like Hilbert had, except in her case that only lasted for a little
while. One of them is beginning to have stool firm into splats
rather than liquid, so that is a very good improvement for one
of them, but they are still playing though they are tired. Pivot
was temporarily in a large travel cage, but is now in with the
other.

We have to ask if they want Hilbert separate or if he can be in
with Morney. (Asking in case re-infection is a worry, though he
is still sick so I suspect not.)

We think they caught this from us.

There has not been any known sort of exposure, either of them,
or through our clothing to other ferrets or ferret households in
the last two weeks so we doubted it could be ECE, and the
rapid improvement does not look like ECE, plus the waste does
not have the reek which fills an entire home that ECE tends to
cause. There also has not been any known exposure which
could have allowed them to get coccidia or giardia. The food
is from new bags opened several weeks ago and carefully
stored.

Steve and I each did have a virus, though, so we think
that we may have shed virus before we knew we were ill, and
that it is one ferrets get.
