Subject: [ferrethealth] Toothpaste allergy/intolerance?
To: FerretHealth <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

This weekend I brushed my boy Edgar's teeth for the first time. It worked like a charm; he loved the toothpaste so much that I had to convince him to give me the brush back when we were done. However, for the next 12 hours or so he had pale brown runny stool. He is one of those flighty high stress boys, and definitely shows the effects of stress in the litterbox. But the toothbrushing didn't seem like a stressful experience for him, quite the opposite. So now I am wondering if ferrets can be allergic to toothpaste.

I used Petrodex Enzymatic toothpaste, poultry flavor. Edgar's regular diet is TF Turkey, Lamb & Venison kibble, though in the past he had eaten a wide variety of kibbles. That also makes me wonder about a chicken sensitivity; if he'd been on chicken based foods his whole life, then went off chicken, and then was exposed again via the toothpaste, perhaps that's when a chicken allergy would emerge. But the toothpaste is full of all sorts of ingredients, and he has had the occasional chicken based crunchy treat, so I'm not sure about that. Anyone have experience with this?

regards,
Regina
