Subject: [ferrethealth] SAVE THIS POST: Administrative info to help all (& a golden oldie below it)
To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

ALL FHL MEMBERS SHOULD SAVE THIS POST, PLEASE!

DO use the settings information below before you leave for vacation
to avoid being removed from membership and having to rejoin!

(Doing so will also save us moderators a LOT of time
which means that Pam has more time to keep up the
needed resources like the FHL recommended veterinarians
list (available through the Files section), the FHL
recommended compounding pharmacies list
(also available through there), and the separate
compete FHL Archives which can be reached from
the introduction paragraphs on the FHL homepage
and also from the important FHL addresses near the
bottom of the FHL homepage. Resetting your own
address preferences and removing dead addresses
also means that I will have more time to look things up
for people who need extra help (and during vacation
months that is always harder because of the many people
who do not reset their FHL settings when they will be away
so they bounce over and over, or who use different
addresses in summer and forget to remove the unused
ones, both things using up a good chunk of time which
could be used more constructively to help someone.)

I'll also show you how to change to no-mail
setting or to daily digest setting if you want
to remain a member but not get mail or get
less mail.

This info will help with any Yahoogroup to
which you belong. Just use the techniques
while working from their own homepages.

This is something that people really need to do
for themselves unless the email has been ended,
but luckily either is easy as can be.

To change settings you just go to the FHL
homepage and above the brown bar near the
top on your right you will see the words:
"My Groups"

Just click that open

Now on the upper left of the page that opens
click open the words:
"Edit my groups"

Then just use the scroll arrows to make your choice.

BTW, it is recommended if people know that their
mailboxes are going to fill to the point of rejecting
mails or if their mailboxes are going to be suspended
as during a vacation that this be done a couple of days
beforehand. That will avoid bounces. Some people
with long business trips or long vacations find themselves
automatically removed due to too many consecutive
bounces then have to rejoin.

Now, how to remove oneself:

This information is in the same place as the joining
information. When people change email addresses it is
recommended that they use the info there to get the old
address off the membership roles.

Again, go to the FHL homepage:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ferrethealth/

Now just scroll done almost to the bottom of the page
and you will see:

These are automated addresses. No one ever reads
them; the computers just notice which address send
them and perform their assigned functions on those
addresses.

To subscribe you send a mail from the address you
want to subscribe to the subscribe address.

To unsubscribe you send a mail to the unsubscribing
address from the address which you wish to unsubscribe.

We request that administrative questions be sent to the
list owner address there, like letting us know if an
address is defunct but was not unsubscribed before it
shows up to require "bouncing address" notifications.

Notice that the FHL Archives address is also there;
even non-members can use the archives, and
non-members also can read the FHL at the website
though they can not post.

Like most groups our group rules are in the Files
section, and the FHL also has further information
there and links in the links section.

There is also a photo album section which is reserved
solely for ferret health photos so that the allocated
space is not used up by non-health photos.

-----

Now, how to look things up, since during the
hurricane season there may be days or weeks when it
is not possible for the moderators to get on-line,
or if only one or two cane then those may have too
little time to also look things up for people, and because
we may lack time to do it if this is a bad year for people
not changing their mail settings before vacations, or
not removing their defunct addresses.

To: ...searching archives

but I really lack spare time in a huge way so suggest these resources
for searching archives:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez

Possible search terms:

Lupron ferret

http://ferrethealth.org/archive/

possible search terms:

Subject box:

abstract

Message body box:

Leuprolide

Just leave the other box empty. You only need to use one box but can
narrow a search with more boxes.
For example, you can leave the other two boxes empty and just use the
message body box with search term

article and Lupron

The FHL Archives can always be linked to from the homepage in the FHL
--

I've been so short on time in the last few years that I have not
carried as many vet posts to the FML as I should but in the FML
archives. The FML Archives location is always in the header of the
FML each day.
http://listserv.ferretmailinglist.org/archives/ferret-search.html

Click
search all archives

Then in the String box put
Lupron

In subject box put the phrase (in quotes)
"from FHL"

You can narrow it more by putting in my mac address or both of my
addresses but you don't need to

and choose the dates you want covered, for example, you may want to go
from Jan 1995 to April 2010

Then click search.
--

For Google it may be best to use Google Scholar. Just go to

http://www.google.com/

and look at the refined menu at the top. Follow the arrow and you
will see "Google Scholar". Click that.

Now use which ever search terms you want. You can start with

ferret +Lupron

--

In Pubmed
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez
just use the terms this way to learn about deslorelin
ferret deslorelin
then click search

With Pubmed if you read one abstract but then need to go back
to the general list of results for your search terms it may ask if it
can send a form again. Yes, I know that some sites which sell
things also use that approach but remember that this is a free
governmental database and that this is just how they organize
it and let them do so, unless it really bothers you in which case
you can go to your "history" section of the controls menu and
select the page that way instead of with a back arrow or can
re-search.

It is really THAT easy so anyone can do it -- unless, of course, the
person is asked to do many, many of these each day but already has a
full schedule. :-O ;-)

Just narrow your search enough by not using horribly broad words, or
notice who the posts come from in your results to narrow which results
you click and then read, and you are set. Easy as can be!

There are other URLs which are useful to have handy in the
LINKS section of the FHL website and in my signature lines below.
Not all are up to date due to lack of spare time. More can be
found by searching the FHL Archives, for example:
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/SG15794
if storms cause enough problems that alternative vets are needed.
