Subject: [ferrethealth] Coughing
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I hope someone can help. I have a little 5 year old albino girl who takes these coughing spells. She seems like she might be having trouble swalling. She does drink water and eats and I started her on baytril. Please any suggestions. Thank you so much.

[If this is coughing rather than choking
or having reflux then the first step is
a chest x-ray to check heart and lungs.
There is also a form of cardiomyopathy
(hypertrophic) which takes an ultrasound
to see usually, but a chest x-ray is a huge
help in a large number of cases.

If it might be reflux then the veterinarian
will check for megaesophagus, as well as
easier things to treat like a sore throat.
Lesions in the mouth will also be checked
for by the vet and the causes of these can
vary from local infection to kidney problems.

There are more possible causes, including
just plain bolting food a lot, but that sort of
behavior is unlikely to have happened suddenly
at middle age unless there was a stressor like
greatly increased competition for food.

Please, never start a ferret on medication
on your own. It can make it harder to find
some disease causes, and if the medication
is expired some can become toxic.

Time for a vet appt! If you do not have a
ferret vet go to resources like:
