Subject: [ferrethealth] Deslorelin update
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Out of 13 doses of deslorelin I've had two regrow fur, 2 have died, and the rest had no improvement. Our implants were from 3 different batches. Fortunately most of the clinics other clients have seen good results with the deslorelin, though one other client whose ferret was implanted in October called me this weekend when her ferret had trouble urinating.

Sully had his implant in Sept 09. Last week he had tenderness in his abdomen and smaller urine puddles. I scheduled him for surgery. Yesterday we did an ultrasound first as Sully is at leat 8 years old, I've had him almost 6 years (came to me Dec 04) and he was well into adulthood then. The ultrasound showed an enlarged prostate, good blood flow through the vena cava and a huge growth on the right adrenal. Physical located the tumor as about golf ball size - into surgery we went. When opening him up the tumor was found to be so large our vet could not put a safety on the vena as it laid directly on and attached the entire length of the tumor (golf ball size), and engulfed his left kidney. The liver looked good and his heart was strong. But because of the placement and size of the tumor, Sully's advanced age, I decided to have him closed up and go with medications and herbs. His chances of coming through the surgery were very low and I just wasn't ready to let him go.
We've started Sully on finasteride (he was already on baytril which was helping the flow) and we'll be adding Essiac and mushroom extracts to his soup.

I wasn't ready to let Sully go on the table so I'll manage his condition at home with our vet's input. I'm sorry I made the wrong decision in putting him on the table as now he has to recover from the incision but had I gone the other way I would have second thoughts too. sigh.
