To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Not many with enteric ECE pass away, but some do.
Usually when it is worst there are complications
so it would pay to have the vet do a CBC and
a chemistry panel, as well as being sure to check the
specific gravity of his urine, and the vet will
consider the possibilities of secondary infections,
and of intestinal complications to the illness like
IBD or colitis.

Some complications can be tackled better than others
can, so the tests will help you decide what to do,
depending on the results.

We had two who about as bad for well over 3 months. One
had colitis and developed some kidney issues from the
repeated dehydration. The other had hidden heart disease.
Both made it through ECE. The one with hidden heart disease
did not have a huge amount of time after but still got to enjoy
some more life. The one with kidney damage went years longer
but his kidneys did later cause him serious trouble, though
he actually went of lymphoma before his kidneys could fail.

They were fortunate, but I understand what you mean because
we were in the same position, and the testing really helped us.
Of course, if Spot had not been able to concentrate his urine
well enough then he would have had a mercy shot back then,
but luckily, he still had a chance.
