Do you have a lot of pigeons in your area?
This, from 'Diagnosis and successful treatment of Cryptococcus neoformans v=
ariety grubii in a domestic ferret'
Christopher S. Hanley, Peter MacWilliams, Steve Giles, and Jean Par=E9 Cana=
dian Veterinary Journal October 2006; 47(10): 1015=961017
"While C. neoformans var. grubii can be isolated from multiple environmenta=
l sources, including soil, fruits, and the oropharynx, gastrointestinal tra=
ct, and skin of healthy humans, the most common source is avian excreta, es=
pecially that of pigeons. Infection most likely occurs through inhalation o=
f the organism, as suggested by the high prevalence of nasal cryptococcosis=
in cats (80%). From there, the organism can disseminate hematogeneously, m=
ost often to the central nervous system."
