Subject: [ferrethealth] 2 Year Old with Insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Pyatt hasn't had his blood glucose levels checked or anything but all the signs pointed to insulinoma a month or so ago when he crashed randomly one night, despite him being only 2 years old and having been the most active out of all my ferrets before then. I've had him on prednisone since then and he'd been fine but about 4 days ago he crashed again. I've had him on a canned evo cat food, chicken baby food, and wellness core cat kibble mix and I've been giving him lot's of water as well.

Mentally he seems fine but he just sleeps all the time, is quite weak, and seems to only eat and drink when I make him. Right now he's on .25ml of the pred but it doesn't seem to be working. I gave him .27ml tonight but that didn't seem to help either. I called my vet to see if I could up it to .30ml but she never called me back.

I'm just not sure what to do. If he's still bad tomorrow (which I'd be shocked if he wasn't) I'll take him to the vet and get her to give him a steroid injection and some fluids intravenously and see if I can up his meds.

Any other ideas?

Also, has anyone heard anything about corticosteroid shots instead of the prednisone?

Thanks everyone!!

-Karen

[It can be very dangerous to give Prednisolone based
only on symptoms. The same symptoms can be
caused by diabetes and Prednisolone will worsen that.

Always have the ferret tested first.

There are other things which can cause crashes. A
two year old who crashes should also have a chest
x-ray to check for JL, for example.
