Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: ferret vaccines
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

at one time i think they recalled or stopped a vaccine and i forgot which one it was rabies or the destemper shot. When i get another ferret I wanted to make sure he got the right shots. My previous ferret would have reactions to the shots.

[OTHERS will tell you about methods to reduce
reaction risk such as timing and pre-medications.

You probably are thinking of Fervac which is no
longer made and was stopped long enough ago
that it is unlikely that anyone has any.

With pharmaceutical companies changing hands
people have also been keeping an eye on which
vaccines may be lost to product reductions.
Luckily, IMRAB 3 appears to be safe since it is a
very popular rabies vaccine for many species.
There was a short term worry if in the months
before the pharmaceutical that used to make that
changed hands if quality might have been affected,
but again that was long enough ago that the
batches about which people had concerns would
have been used up since it is used on so many
mammals. There have been no recent problems
mentioned that I've heard of since it changed hands
and the new pharma company is making it, but
a low rate of reactions is always to expected. If
memory serves something like 98% do NOT have
allergic reactions.

Some individuals are more prone to reactions.

Read about reactions and not confusing reactions
with the normal immune system response,
but since I only have time for a narrow search
you will have to search more broadly on your own:

OTHERS will tell you about methods to reduce
reaction risk such as timing and pre-medications,
or look that up in the archives!
