Subject: [ferrethealth] 2 Year Old with Insulinoma
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
Hi,
I have a four year old ferret with insulinoma. He would zone out and got really weak. Someone suggested mixing chromium picolinate (200 mcg) in the water bottle. I found them in tablets and just grind them up and shake. I really noticed a difference in him. I have 5 of the little guys and there was no way I could separate the water so I checked with a vet. He said there was no reason I couldn't give it to all of them even though none of the others exhibited symptoms. None of the others have had the problem. I've been giving it to them for well over a year now. Haven't seen other postings, wondering if anyone else has heard of or used it.
[This could be extremely dangerous. Chromium is
used to REDUCE blood glucose, not raise it, and in
ferrets with bad insulinoma that would be a very
hazardous mistake.
There are posts from ferret expert veterinarians in
the easily searched, separate FHL Archives:
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/
on this topic.
Of course, insulinoma cases can vary a lot. Did you
also start doing any of the established things that
help many insulinoma patients:
frequent meals (and sometimes different types of meals)
Prednisolone instead of Prednisone
changes in dosing
Pred given 2 times a day instead of once, or three times
a day instead of twice
Diazoxide/Preglycem added
etc.
Is this a subjective observation or based upon blood
glucose tests?
