Carafate is given to coat the lining of the mouth, throat and stomach before
giving the pred. We used it instead of the pepcid. Give the carafate about
20 minutes prior to eating. We also put the pred in the soup after warming
it as it was less stressful on the ferret. So only give the carafate before
giving the pred dose. Oh, we only give .25mls as he is a small ferret.
My two ferrets to have ECE heaved and vomited the first week of sickness but
stopped after the meds started. They both still look underweight weeks into
the disease process but both eat their normal food and water on their own.
They do tire easy but play for a while usually. They have days where they
both sleep more and are less active but then will bounce back again to doing
well. I understand that will go on for a few months. I just try to make
sure they get extra vitamins as nutrients don't pass into their gut as
easily during this disease process. Close watching is warranted but I don't
weigh them but once a week or so. I did daily at first because they were so
sick.
Bless you little Sprout! I know you are miserable! Hang in there!
You to Mike!
Paula
