Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Sprout Update Information request
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This has been a on going issue.=C2=A0=C2=A0 About 4 months ago Sprout had s=
urgery because of weight loss and a painful mass in his abdomen.=C2=A0 The =
mass was a lymph node, he also had an enlarged left adrenal gland which was=
removed.=C2=A0 The biopsies showed ECE.=C2=A0 He was put on Pred and an an=
tibiotic (he has had three courses of antibiotics since surgery).=C2=A0 He =
improved after surgery but then lost weight,=C2=A0=C2=A0 He has been going =
through a cycle of eating well (pureed chicken 3-4 times a day) for a coupl=
e days then not wanting to eat for 3 - 4 days.=C2=A0 He doesn't improve eno=
ugh with the good days to offset the bad days so he is getting worse.=C2=A0=
=C2=A0
=C2=A0
We've been trying to figure out what is going on.=C2=A0 I have several peop=
le telling me that it is typical for ferrets to have good days and bad days=
but I'm not sure if they mean they have a week or so good with a day or tw=
o of bad or if what Sprout is doing is typical or not.=C2=A0
=C2=A0
I've also had people suggest that he may have developed an allergy to chick=
en which makes sense he eats chicken on his good days, this makes him ill a=
nd he doesn't want to eat and he gets a little better and then starts to ea=
t again.
=C2=A0
Other ideas is maybe he has lymphoma but there wasn't enough lymphoma cells=
in the biopsies to be reported and now its getting worse.=C2=A0 I understa=
nd it is typical for ferrets with lymphoma to improve for a few months on p=
red then get worse and that has happened.
=C2=A0
We've tried Forti Flora to restore normal intestinal bacterial flora, and a=
ppetite stimulant, and carafate.=C2=A0 None of these seem to have helped.
=C2=A0
His periods of not wanting to eat are getting worse and I'm had to force hi=
m to eat several times and after wards on a couple of those times he has vo=
mited a few minutes after wards which isn't typical for ECE.
=C2=A0
He is so thin.=C2=A0 We have increased his feeding to every 2 - 3 hours and=
switched off of chicken.=C2=A0 If its ECE this wont help but if its an all=
ergy to chicken then it will.=C2=A0 If its lymphoma then it wont help.=C2=
=A0 We're not out anything for getting off chicken.
=C2=A0
Thanks
=C2=A0

I'm not really sure what to suggest that it could be, but, if your vet is l=
eaning towards a food allergy or lymphoma... Pred will help with either one=
.=C2=A0 You may want to ask your vet about trying Pred as a last resort sor=
t of (without a sure diagnosis), since he is not doing so well.=C2=A0 If he=
does improve with the Pred, you can then consider doing additional tests t=
o find out what is really going on.=C2=A0 Good luck with your little guy.
