Subject: [ferrethealth] Latest on Sprout
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com, F M L <ferret-L@listserv.ferretmailinglist.org>

Sprouts weight is at 1 lbs 9.6 ounces which is about 12 ounces below his av=
erage.
=A0
I've added ensure to his pureed turkey and he is more willing to eat it.=A0=
I'm looking into ways to improve its nutritional value.=A0 Would adding a/=
d to the pureed turkey help?=A0
=A0
I've also moved to feeding him every three hours around the clock.=A0
=A0
Sprout is more alert and is walking around a lot more than he has the last =
few weeks.=A0 He appears more alert and interested in what is going on arou=
nd him.
=A0
I plan on continuing the feedings and adding more nutrition to his diet.=A0=
Thank you to those who pointed out that pureed turkey alone was not enough=
nutrition.=A0 Will giving him Nutri-Cal?=A0 If so how much?
=A0
Also thank you to the person who put forward the idea that maybe it was tim=
e to help him over the bridge.=A0 I know it could not have been easy to bri=
ng up that idea.=A0 Believe me that idea has been in my mind for weeks.=A0 =
ECE isn't suppose to be something that results in a ferret going over the r=
ainbow bridge and ferrets with this often have good and bad days.=A0 Sprout=
seems to be having a very hard time with it.=A0 It is because of the very =
difficult time that he is having that I'm wondering if he has something els=
e going on.=A0 Its too bad that food allergy and lymphoma have similar symp=
toms.=A0 I don't want to give up too soon but I also do not want him to suf=
fer.=A0
=A0
Right now Sprout seems to be holding and in some ways (increased alertness =
and activity) seems to be some better.=A0 His weight is holding at 1 lbs 9.=
6 ounces and I will continue to watch that.=A0 I hope it starts climbing so=
on.=A0
=A0
Thank you

[Sometimes people notice what is wrong because
those things are emphasized in posts to try to find
solutions but they miss other things -- like the note
you also included about Sprout playing and the one
in here about him being alert.

Sometimes it can take a long time for weight to be added
especially if the small intestine, where much of digestion
happens, got quite damaged. We also dealt with a terrible
bout of ECE in a former year and it took a very long time for
the ferrets who got the most ill to regain muscle mass and
weight. After hydronephrosis from a different cause Hilbert
took even longer to regain weight -- about a year and a
half -- yet here he is at over 7 and a half years -- and
although he is in his final illness he still has fun each day,
just not as much of it and between longer times of sleep,
and it's not at a gallop any longer but at a trot. When he
gives up and the meds don't work that will be a different
matter. When it is time -- any only you and your vet will
know when that is -- then a mercy shot is the final gift.
