With 2 of my ferrets (Tweek and Garrison) The issue slowly appeared. The occasional odd poops got more frequest then took a drastic turn in them. Arte presented quickly like a Flu or a blockage. His stool was never off-he just presented with pain, vomitting and nausea (Constant tooth grinding).

[Allergies require earlier exposure to
the same item or to one that is similar
enough or related (like when a person
who is allergic to potatoes reacts to
eggplant or tomatoes because they are
both Solanaceous plants, or when someone
allergic to shrimp then reacts to crab or
lobster because all are Crustaceans).

What happens is that there is an exposure
during which the body mistakenly thinks
that the item is an invader. It then "teaches"
certain cells of the immune system to
respond to the item as an invader. That time
there typically is NOT a reaction.

The reaction happens with the NEXT exposure
usually. The mis-trained immune system says
"I know this; it's an invader." and reacts.

Some foods are more likely to produce reactions
but very commonly the foods that cause reactions
are ones that are eaten a lot, such as favorite
foods, which is why rice is a more common
allergen in southern Asia and wheat is more
common as an allergen in northern Asia. That is
also why people are trying to reduce the numbers
of times ferrets get CD vaccines (by doing titers)
after the initial kit series of canine distemper
vaccines.
