Subject: [ferrethealth] Ensure
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Usually just lurk but I needed to let everyone know that Ensure does help
sick ferrets. Years ago my little Lucy got very sick with h-pylori and a
bleeding ulcer (long story on how that happened from before we got her and
her littermate). Well I just knew she was going to die, she was already
tiny (less then a pound) and dropped down to 9oz. Well we were forse
feeding soup and meds then Dr [Name removed per FHL rules]
had me leave her over night so they
could give extra fluids and when I picked her up the next afternoon she
stated I started her on Strawberry Ensure. I was so funny Lucy loved it and
would take it with out a fight, so I started mixing it in her soup and she
ate better within a few months she was up to 18oz and had never looked
better. I kept giving her a few drops of Ensure for the rest of her life
(several years). Her glocose was always good so I know I was lucky in that
it was not to much sugar for her.

[This is another situation in which
the use may be questionable for
certain specific ferrets so let the
treating veterinarians decide
individually for each ferret in
relation to the specific illness.

Reminder: done wrong force feeding
can cause aspiration pneumonia so the
FHL member vets ask us moderators to
remind members to learn techniques to
minimize risk hands-on from their own
veterinarians or their veterinarians'
veterinary technicians.
